The Commission’s Environment Sub Group’s role is to equip individuals and groups within parishes with materials and encourage a faith-based response to the threat of climate change, inequality between peoples, highlighting the reasons for these in broad terms and the consequent impacts this has on creation. The Group bases this upon Pope Francis’ 2015 Encyclical Laudato Si’: on Care of our Common Home. In response, we have produced discussion-based resources for parish use for Lent (2016 – 18) and Creation Time (the period September 1 – October 4) for 2016 and 2017 and are working on the 2018 edition to complete the three-year cycle with both resources. These follow the Gospels of the respective Sundays, case studies, questions, extracts from Laudato Si’, prayer and invitation to action, based upon the See, Judge, Act model of Catholic Social Teaching. We encourage in particular take-up of CAFOD’s Livesimply Award as part of a response to these concerns and have brought together parishes to encourage this development. We will be working with clergy and laity on these themes during the preparation for Adoremus! the forthcoming Eucharistic Congress and highlighting ways in which parishes can respond.
